We had lots of fun yesterday in the yard at our Jingle Bell Run. Everyone looked very festive and did lots of laps of both yards. A big thank you to the girls from 4th, 5th and 6th on the Active Schools Committee for organising and running the event. They did a super job as usual looking after the music, giving out the bells and taking photographs. See the video below for some pictures.

We've been working really hard in 4th class this month. We brought in and presented our projects on 1916 a few weeks ago. They were all very impressive and a huge effort was made with these at home. We're also reading a novel about the Rising. We also had a surprise visit from James Mc Carthy with the Sam Maguire which was really great. We're so lucky to have seen it twice this year. This month we're busy preparing for Christmas. We've been doing Advent tasks every day at school and at home. We decorated our classroom, made gift bags in art and made our own Christmas decorations out of recycled materials as part of our Green Schools work. This is a competition and the standard is very high. Our teacher will need some help to judge it. We have lots of shows to watch this week, a carol service to practise for and we are doing a Jingle Bell Run tomorrow dressed in our festive gear. There's great excitement everywhere. We'd like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas. See the slideshow for pictures of what's been happening. We have been very busy in room 6 getting ready for Christmas. Our Aistear theme is 'Santa's workshop', so we have been helping Santa make some toys. In junk art we have been making lots of wonderful things like reindeer, snowmen, and sleighs. We have also been exploring the arctic in our water area. We had special little visitors come and put up our decorations too, luckily Dave caught them on camera. Check out all our festive fun below!
The girls in 5th class, R.16, were delighted to go to Draiocht in Blanchardstown to participate in a Christmas card printing workshop. Andrew and Sarah were both really helpful in explaining how to roll ink on the plastic template. Then the girls engraved a Christmas picture on the template before putting this image face down on a card. The next step was placing the card in the new printing machine, and turning the handle to ensure the picture was pressed into the card.
We had great fun learning this new skill, and experimenting with designs and colours.
Mrs Phelan's 5th class were the overall winners of the Irish dancing trophy for this year. They were delighted to win it, after enjoying several weeks of Irish dancing lessons this term with Colm, our dancing teacher. This trophy is awarded every year to the class which Colm feels has performed with enthusiasm and skill. The girls will now take turns to take the trophy home every night.
We were very busy in room 3 in November. Our Aistear theme was 'The Post Office' where everyone got a chance to write and post some letters. We did lots of printing, practising our letter sounds and creating patterns. We have been learning Irish dancing since September and we are getting very good! Take a look at some pictures from our classroom. Hour of Code
This week, for Computer Science Education Week, we are having great fun learning how to 'code' in our Computer Class.
'Coding' or Computer programming is like giving your computer step by step instructions and telling it what to do. When you do this you can create a game, make an animation, a story and much more. The people at CODE.ORG have organised a worldwide event known as the 'Hour of Code'. Last year over 100 million students worldwide tried coding in one week. This year, the focus is on getting more girls coding too. We has so much fun last year, we said we'd join in again. After all, in this technological world that is ever advancing, computer programming is becoming a life skill. Anybody can code
CODE.ORG have developed lots of fun, enjoyable and easy to follow tutorials on their website for beginners to start coding. Celebrities and people in power are endorsing that more schools should teach children how to code and we are quickly seeing the benefits as our problem solving, mathematical and logical skills increase as we figure out how to programme our games and animations. We often work with a partner for coding so we can figure it out together too.
Check out our school Computer Blog to see what activities are suitable for different age groups or go to code.org/learn and choose a suitable coding activity yourself. Some firm favourites in class so far have been the Minecraft, Star Wars, Candy Quest, Frozen and Angry Bird tutorials. This week in room 7 we have been exploring icebergs. Before we put our ice balls into the basin, we predicted what would happen. Some said that it would float/sink/fizz and others said it would bob up and down and that most of the ice ball will be under the water. We then drew a picture of exactly what we seen. We discovered that most of the iceberg was under the water and you could only see a little bit on top.
Afterwards, we kept one ice ball in water, another ice ball in a basin with no water, another one at the window and poured salt on the 4th one. We predicted which ice ball would melt the quickest. Which do you think would? |
