Ms. O'Reilly and Ms. Moore's class have been busy making St. Brigid's crosses out of reused waste paper and empty milk cartons! It was a brilliant way to celebrate St. Brigid's day. They also made daffodils to celebrate the start of Spring! They look great and the girls really enjoyed making them! Well done on all of that recycling girls! By Ruth, Isabelle, Lauren and Maria 6th Class (Green-schools Committee) Top Tip!
Why not use your milk carton as a plant or seed pot? Here is a fun link that shows you how to plant a tree in your carton! It even tells you what your carton is made from! Huge thanks to Ms. McGrath and all who helped to organise such a wonderful Multicultural week in our school. It certainly was a feast of fun and colour for everyone involved!
We learned all about each others' countries, cultures and customs in our classrooms! We played each others' games! We went on a virtual tour of the world by interacting with the fabulous displays in the hall! Some of our parents came in to chat! We enjoyed two fantastic fashion shows where the girls modelled their beautiful traditional costumes! We adopted a country and wore our colours to represent it! We took part in a really fun obstacle course! We ate some yummy food! ;-) We learned and sang two great songs! Best of all we had great fun learning about our friends from our friends! Click on these links for more of a flavour of the festivities! The Active Schools Blog for more on the Obstacle Course The Gallery section- Videos for more on the Fashion Show! Our wonderful 3rd class members are busy collecting all of your used or 'wasted' markers and pens to create our very first recycled rainbow!! The girls are very excited to make and display the resulting masterpiece! Just like the beautiful mosaic we worked on last year, this time you can donate a marker or pen to their collection to create a colourful rainbow.
We hope to have their rainbow on display in the next few weeks so keep on donating! Don't let your markers and pens go to waste! Let's create something beautiful instead! Sarah, Holly and Catríona from Ms. Moran/Ms. Coggins' class and Jennifer, Ella, Sarah, Aoileann and Rebecca from Ms. Moore/ Ms. O' Reilly's class will be coming to your class to collect more markers and pens next week!
Room 14 loved Ms. Devlin's recycled decorations so much that they made their own using scraps of material, card, paper and old Christmas decorations. Here are the results! Ms Devlin's class have been busy making fabulous Christmas decorations from recycled materials! We think they look way better than anything you could buy in a shop and we love how green this idea is! Well done girls- Happy Christmas to you!
Maybe it has given you some inspiration to gather up some used packaging or wrapping to create your own designs! Maybe you could even give old decorations a new lease of life? Here are the graphs showing the average amount of waste in one day in our school. How good at recycling is your class? Our Action Plan! At our workshop on Friday we brainstormed all the ways we could REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE our waste. Below you will find our main actions. We hope you will help us with them to make a huge difference in our school and community. We plan on working on these in the coming months.
If we work together we can make a difference! (Lauren & Maria Greenschool's Committee) ![]() We began our first workshop on 4th December with Gráinne Ryan from Waste Action Ireland and Clare Egan from Dublin City Council. We collected all of our school waste from 1 day and transported it to the hall so we could inspect it and weigh it. Why did we do this? It sounds really strange! Well, we were checking a few main things:
What do you think? Does this seem like a lot of waste? Do you think we could do better in our school? How? *Hint: Maybe these could be some magic words for St. Brigid's! REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and RETHINK!! Tell us! Why not put your thoughts or suggestions in our Green Schools suggestion box? Remember to write them on re-used paper!! ;-) Better still, save paper and leave us a comment on this page! We will be back next week with the results! How did your class do? How did the teachers do.......?????!!! Finally for now, here are some images of the Green Schools Committee hard at work last Thursday! There are now only 4days to go until we begin our waste audit in St. Brigid's with our facilitator Grainne Ryan. We are excited to see how we can improve our school even more! Watch this space! ;-) We also need you all to put your thinking caps on this week to come up with a new Green Schools motto for our theme of Global Citizenship! The suggestion box is now in the hall beside the photocopier! We are looking forward to your entries!!! What do those big words 'Global Citizenship' mean???!!GLOBAL means the world that we live in and CITIZENSHIP is like being a member or part of a team or club.
So basically our theme just means that we all have to work together to protect our planet no matter where we live on it! One of the ways we are doing this in our school and at home is by recycling. So let's all work together in this special club! We all have a very important part to play! |
